چکیده

The incidence of tuberculosis has always been high among monkeys and anthropoid apes in captivity in zoological gardens and research colonies. More recently it has been recognized that the disease is a serious menace both to the welfare of the animals and to that of human contacts. About 25 per cent of more than 2000 monkeys and anthropoids used by the Laboratory of Physiology of the Yale University School of Medicine during the past 10 years have been infected with this disease.1" This paper deals with its incidence and diagnosis in the colony, and with the efforts toward its elimination through the use of tuberculin tests and other measures. Much has been published since the beginning of the century concerning tuberculosis in subhuman primates. This present series is, however, larger and contains a higher percentage of tuberculin-tested animals which have come to autopsy than any previous one. It represents also the findings in a colony of monkeys maintained for research purposes other than the study of tuberculosis, and under much the same conditions as obtain in such colonies elsewhere. For these reasons the material may be valuable.

New approaches to tuberculosis surveillance in nonhuman primates.

Despite significant progress in reducing the incidence of tuberculosis in nonhuman primates (NHPs) maintained in captivity, outbreaks continue to occur in established colonies, with potential serious consequences in human exposures, animal losses, disruption of research, and costs related to disease control efforts. The intradermal tuberculin skin test (TST) using mammalian old tuberculin (MOT)...

Guidelines for the prevention and control of tuberculosis in non-human primates: recommendations of the European Primate Veterinary Association Working Group on Tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND Effective tuberculosis (TB) control requires accurate diagnostic methods but the tuberculin skin test has serious limitations. Both false-negative and false-positive reactions are common, resulting in the spread of the infection and devastating TB outbreaks. Results of questionnaire surveys concerning TB testing practices in primate housing facilities showed great differences in test...

A Comparison of Two-Step Tuberculin Skin Test between Health-Care Workers and Nonhospital Employees

Background: The tuberculin test is widely used to identify tuberculosis infection. Some individuals infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis may have an initial negative skin test reaction to tuberculin. The two step purified protein derivative skin test can decrease misinterpretation of tuberculin test .This study was aimed at comparing the two- step tuberculin skin test and booster phenomenon...

QuantiFERON-TB Gold and Tuberculin Skin Test for the Diagnosis of Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Children

Background: Appropriate diagnosis and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) play the most important role in the control of tuberculosis. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of LTBI among healthy tuberculosis unexposed children vaccinated with BCG using the tuberculin skin test (TST) and QuantiFERON TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) and comparing the agreement between the two tests....
